【解説】スタンダード曲のなかで断然1位
この曲はジョン・グリーンがガートルード・ローレンス Gertrude Lawrence の伴奏ピアニストを務めているときに彼女のためにつくった曲で、ヘイマン（サウア、イートンは違う歌詞に関係あるらしいが不詳）が作詞している。まだ曲ができたばかりのときに彼女はロンドンへ行き、BBC放送でこれを歌ったことからヒットしていった。それでブロードウェイのプロデューサーのマックス・ゴードン Max Gordon がアメリカでの権利を買い、彼のレヴュー【Three’s a Croud】に入れ、なかでリビィ・ホルマン Libby Holman が歌った。最初の録音は’30年のイギリスのジャック・ヒルトン Jack Hylton 楽団で著作権登録の11日前だったという。つづいてアメリカではルイ・アームストロングも出したが、これを本当に大きなスタンダード曲にしたのはポール・ホワイトマン楽団（歌ジャック・フルトン）のレコードで、ヒットチャートで1位を6週も維持した。そしてホルマンのレコードも3位までいった。さらに少なくとも11のバンドがこの時レコードを出しているという。以後映画には『The Man I Love』（’46）に使われ、『Body and Soul』（’47）では題名にも使われ、多くの歌手に歌いつがれてきた。ジャズの演奏や歌では、バラードとしてもっとも典型的なスタンダード曲になっている。jazzstandard.com ではスタンダード曲に順位をつけているが、なんと千曲を超えるジャズ・スタンダード曲のなかで、この曲は断然1位である。
